When to Buy King Crab in the UAE — Season & Timing

King crab is not farmed. It is wild-caught under quota, which means it behaves like a commodity with a calendar — and knowing that calendar is worth real money to anyone buying it regularly.

Why availability moves

Red king crab fisheries are quota-managed and seasonal. Landings concentrate into fishing windows rather than arriving evenly through the year, and the quota itself is set by the managing authority and can change season to season.

Because the product is blast-frozen at origin, frozen cuts remain available year-round from stock — this is what keeps a consistent kitchen supplied out of season. Live crab is far more tied to the landing calendar.

When price firms

Demand — not supply — drives most of the price movement you will feel. Prices firm ahead of peak gifting and entertaining periods: year-end holidays, National Day, and the major festive seasons when premium seafood moves in volume across the Gulf.

The practical consequence: if you know you need king crab for a fixed date in a peak week, ordering early protects both price and availability. Ordering late in a peak week means paying whatever the market is, if there is any left at your grade.

How to buy against the calendar

Work from a weekly landing list rather than an annual price sheet. Any supplier quoting one flat annual figure is either averaging heavily or not telling you the whole story.

For restaurants and regular buyers, standing allocation beats ad-hoc ordering — it secures grade and price through the peaks.

For a one-off occasion, order ahead of the date rather than into it.

Frequently asked

Is king crab available all year in the UAE?
Frozen cuts — whole, clusters, merus, second phalanx and claw meat — are available year-round from stock frozen at origin. Live king crab is tied more closely to the landing calendar and is pre-order only.
When is king crab most expensive?
Prices typically firm ahead of peak entertaining and gifting periods rather than by fishing season alone. Ordering ahead of a peak date protects both price and grade.
How far ahead should I order?
For a fixed occasion in a peak week, as early as you can — availability at a specific grade is what runs out first. Availability is confirmed against the weekly landing list.
