This is the question we are asked most often in the Gulf, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a marketing one. The short version: it depends on which school of jurisprudence you follow, and reasonable scholars differ.

The majority position

The Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali schools generally hold that all creatures of the sea are permissible, citing the Qur'anic verse (5:96): lawful to you is what you catch from the sea and its food. On this view crab, lobster, prawn and shellfish are permissible.

This is the position most commonly applied across the Gulf hospitality sector, which is why king crab, lobster and prawns appear widely on menus in the UAE.

The Hanafi position

The Hanafi school takes a narrower view, holding that only fish (samak) from the sea are permissible. On this reading, crustaceans and shellfish such as crab are not — though many Hanafi scholars treat prawn as a category of fish and therefore permissible, and there is internal discussion on the point.

A household or venue following the Hanafi school may therefore decline crab while accepting prawn. This is a legitimate difference of jurisprudence, not an error.

What this means in practice

If you are serving guests whose position you do not know, offer the choice rather than assume — a menu with both a crustacean and a fin-fish centrepiece respects both views without comment.
